Google has just announced search winners for the year 2006, even though we had not officially finished the year. Either the numerical gap between results are so wide that Google’s smart engineers don’t give a chance for a rank change, or simply they did not want to miss the year-end buzz and stay behind Yahoo’s similar awards… The biggest surprise for me: Rebelde. Too much subjective comments for such a great service. Therefore, let’s roll:

  1. Bebo: A new social-networking site
  2. MySpace: Guess what?
  3. World Cup: Despite ending in July 1st, it is surprising to get to #3 for the full year
  4. Metacafe: #2 video-sharing website after YouTube
  5. Radioblog: I wouldn’t bet on it if I was asked in Dec 24th, 2005.
  6. Wikipedia: Good to see a non-profit, intellectuality-containing website
  7. Video: A generic name for the 2006’s .com star
  8. Rebelde: ??? A Latino soap opera or am I missing somethin’?
  9. Mininova: Place to look for torrents
  10. Wiki: Synonymous to #6…

Wanna know what was hot in 2005? Myspace, Ares, Baidu, Wikipedia, orkut, iTunes, Sky News, World of Warcraft, Green Day, Leonardo Da Vinci. For me, the biggest surprises were Sky News and Green Day. The consistent title seekers: MySpace and Wikipedia.

Last but not least, let’s bet on the list for 2007: myspace & wikipedia for sure. iTV, venice (not the city but the project), torrent & video. Anyone to bet against?
